NWBA Staff Changes

Randy Schubert, NWBA Executive Director, and Dan Humphreys, NWBA Director of Sport & High Performance, have left their positions at the National Wheelchair Basketball Association.

An immediate search is underway to find a new Executive Director.

The Board would like to thank Randy and Dan for their contributions as Executive Director and Director of Sport & High Performance and wish them the best in their new endeavors.

Head Coach Position Available – Lakeshore Foundation – Birmingham, AL

Lakeshore Foundation is seeking a qualified candidate to coach wheelchair basketball at the Championship Division level.

This is a part time job; however other employment opportunities may be available at Lakeshore depending on the skills and interests of the candidate.

Primary Responsibilities of coaching include coordinating a comprehensive basketball program for NWBA Championship Division athletes, planning and conducting practices, coordinating a competition schedule and traveling with the team to competitions.

Formal education in adapted physical education, recreation therapy or a related field is highly desirable. Candidates must have experience in wheelchair sports, both at an introductory and advanced level coaching

and possess effective instructional strategies to ensure highly organized and effective practices, as well as success at competitions.

Much of the work is in the evening and on weekends. Overnight travel is required.

NWBA Awarded Neilsen Foundation Quality of Life Grant

The NWBA was awarded a Quality of Life Program grant for 2015 to develop the NWBA Coaching Education and Training Program.

The program serves engage persons currently coaching as well as those interested in coaching wheelchair basketball in community, rehabilitation hospital, park and recreation, collegiate and veteran’s settings throughout the United States. The program addresses a multitude of needs and skill sets that are required to provide a positive and successful sport experience throughout the lifespan for individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) and other disabilities that are eligible for national and international competition in wheelchair basketball including:

  • a foundation in general coaching principles utilized across all sports and participant populations,
  • SCI and disability specific issues as they relate to motor function, strength, training, conditioning, fatigue, injury prevention, heat related illness, etc.,
  • rules and equipment modifications for various age groups and functional levels,
  • sport specific technical and tactical skills,
  • participant recruitment and retention,
  • program development,
  • sport as a catalyst for independent living.

Through the support of this grant, the NWBA developed a curriculum for NWBA Level I Coaching Certification. The program was rolled out in three locations this spring; Baltimore, MD, Chicago, IL and Arlington, TX. In each location the NWBA Coaching Education and Training Program was combined with a NWBA Youth Camp sponsored by the P&G | Team USA Youth Sports Fund. From these first three trainings 23 coaches have received NWBA Level I Certification.

This presentation provides helpful information that families can use as their prospective collegiate athlete enters high school with a goal of playing wheelchair basketball while earning a college degree. Included are academic and athletic recommendations for each year of high school as well as an overview of the recruiting process.
