U21 Women Victorious at Youth Parapan American Games
USA impresses with an undefeated performance in 3x3 competition

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – October 22, 2013. Five young women selected to represent Team USA won gold in Argentina with a 17-3 win over Canada at the Youth Parapan American Games. The games were held from October 14-19 in Buenos Aires, and the U21 women went undefeated in a 3x3 basketball tournament. Basketball was one of many different sporting events at the games.

Of the five team members, four donned the red, white and blue for the first time. “To be able to see your flag going up and to hear your national anthem playing with a gold medal around your neck is incredible,” recalls Team USA flag bearer, Vanessa Erskine. “It was an amazing opportunity to play for my country, and it was amazing to get to travel and meet other international players.”å

While none of the team members had played together previously, they developed strong chemistry throughout their five days abroad. Erskine explains, “The gold medal game was our best game. We all clicked and worked together as one unit. That chemistry came quickly throughout the tournament and our final win was definitely a team win.”

She also credits the team’s amazing coaching staff and support group for such a strong showing. When asked about playing under Trooper Johnson (BORP), Erskine says, “I loved his advice on pretty much everything he had to say. He is very methodical and getting his insights on different concepts was extremely valuable for me as a player.”

The reduced number of players and dimensions of the court were a part of an experimental IWBF initiative to offer competitive opportunities to countries with fewer resources and players. While six teams where scheduled to compete in the women’s division, only two, Argentina and Canada, participated.
