This week, we are featuring Team USA member Brian Bell. Brian played for the Indiana RHI Pacers and recently moved to Milan, Italy to play internationally. He was a member of the gold-medal winning USA U-23 team in 2005.

USA Wins Gold in Columbia, Qualifies for 2014 World Championships



Team cruises to victory against tough Argentina, sets the 
bar high for future competition 

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – August 15, 2013. Team USA recently earned a gold medal finish
 at the IWBF America’s Cup in Bogota, Columbia. With the victory, USA clinched one of four 
qualifying bids to the men’s wheelchair basketball World Championships that will be held in 
Incheon, South Korea in July 2014. After going undefeated in pool play, USA handily defeated 
Argentina 67-36 in the gold medal game.

USA take home the Gold at the 2013 Americas Cup tournament defeating Argentina 62-36. Congratulations to USA, Argentina, Mexico and Brazil for qualifying for the 2014 World Championships!

Watch the USA Men take on Argentina in the Finals of the 2013 Americas Cup at 3:30pm Central Time today, Sunday, August 11th. The USA men along with Argentina, Mexico and Colombia have already qualified for the 2014 World Championships.

USA will play Mexico in the semi finals at 2:30pm mountain time. USA, Mexico, Colombia and Argentina will represent the Americas Zone at the World Championships in Korea in 2014.

Good luck to NWBA officials Bill Kuerzi and Jaime Oseguera as they will take their written exam for IWBF officials Friday, August 9th. Kuerzi is getting re-certified and Jaime is a new official to the international game. Both are working hard and doing a great job in Bogota officiating several games throughout the tournament! Good luck!

New York City Wheelchair Basketball Tournament Returns on October 5-6, 2013

The 13th annual Matthew Sapolin Memorial Wheelchair Basketball Tournament (formerly the Mayor’s Cup) will bring the nation’s best wheelchair basketball teams to New York City for two days of non-stop action on October 5 & 6! The tournament, held at Manhattan College in the Bronx, is the largest of its kind in the Northeast and has become one of the premier events on the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) schedule. The deadline for teams to register is September 13th so make sure to sign up soon! For more information about this year’s tournament, please visit Facebook.com/SapolinTournament

The USA Women are at Lakeshore Foundation in Birmingham, AL this week for another training camp.  Head Coach Stephanie Wheeler has been focusing on development of the 17 players on this years team.  The women's team will have one more training camp in October to finish our their 2013 season. The women's team who saw a lot of new faces on the roster competed during the Joseph Lyttle Classic earlier this year where Wheeler picked up her first win as an International Head Coach.  The NWBA is very excited about the youth and opportunities of our women's program moving into our 2014 World Championship season.
