WHITEWATER, WISCONSIN – The University of Texas at Arlington Men’s wheelchair team won the 2017 National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament on Saturday outlasting the defending National Champion University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, 76-52. The University of Alabama Women’s team upended the 2016 Women’s National Champion University of Texas at Arlington, 57-48.
The UTA men put in a team effort with five athletes scoring double digits to reclaim the National Championship trophy for the first time since 2006. Leading the Mavs was sophomore Adryan Powell with 22 points and 8 rebounds, who was also named the player of the game. Freshmen Clarence McCarthy-Grogan and Matt Grashen put up 13 and 12 points each, respectively. Junior Ian Pierson had a double-double with 11 points and 12 assists.
For the Warhawks, Christian Seidel scored a team high 16 points, with Guthrie Lindquist scoring 14 points.
Arrin Young of the University of Alabama paced the Tide to their fifth National Championship by contributing 22 points and 7 rebounds. Barbara Gross put up 20 points with Rosalie Lalonde scoring 12 points in their winning effort over the University of Texas at Arlington, 57-48. Gross was named MVP for the National Championships.
The UTA women were paced by a pair of 2016 U.S. Paralympic gold medalists Rose Hollermann and Abigail Dunkin, who scored 14 points and 12 points, respectively. Hollermann was active on both ends of the court as she tabulated 9 assists and 8 rebounds. Morgan Wood scored 13 points.
