The NWBA is dedicated to taking measures to ensure the safety of all athletes, including minors who are involved in the sport. Last summer the NWBA Board of Directors decided to ensure more safe guards for the organization as it made appropriate revisions to the NWBA Policies and Procedures. The new policies and procedures will be implemented for the 2017-18 NWBA season.

In partnership with the U.S. Center for SafeSport, the National Wheelchair Basketball Association requires that all coach members and team representative members must successfully pass the SafeSport initiative every two years. The SafeSport certification should be obtained no later than September 30 or within 45 days of registering.

Team representative members are individuals that support NWBA teams in at least one of the following categories: statistician, athletic trainer members, team classification reviewer, equipment manager, administrator and volunteer.

In partnership with the National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI), employees and volunteers of NWBA must satisfactorily complete criminal background checks. Members who interact directly and frequently with athletes as a regular part of their duties and individuals with must successfully pass the background checks. This includes all coaches and team representatives.

Any individual who is banned, currently suspended or ineligible for membership is prohibited from serving as timers, scorekeepers, or computer operator, or otherwise being in the competition venue at any time in connection with NWBA activity.

Background checks are now fully integrated into the NWBA Non-Athlete registration session. All background checks must be completed through National Center for Safety Initiatives. No other form of background checks will be accepted.
