The National Wheelchair Basketball Association prides itself and its members on safe play for everyone involved. Due to the fact our sport is prominently a contact sport, accidents and incidents may occur. One of the most commonly seen injuries in wheelchair basketball is for the possibility of sustaining a concussion and the severity of this injury can be very serious.

“We feel it is in the best interest of our players to provide educational and training materials regarding concussions to the members of the NWBA," said Anthony Bartkowski, Executive Director. "The training materials offered from the Center for Disease Control provides great resources for our coaches and team representatives with identifying potential symptoms of a concussion."

The NWBA encourages our members to review the practices and procedures of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of HEADS UP Program. This program will be utilized to help further educate and make you aware to the importance of concussion prevention and how to handle a suspected concussion incident. It gives all the proper tools, information and resources to our members to help in case of an event and in order to keep players safe.

The HEADS UP Concussion Program information is now accessible on the NWBA website at www.nwba.org/concussionsafety and can be found under the “Players & Parents” tab. The program page on the website includes an Action Plan Overview; a free Online Training Course; Educational Materials; and Educational Videos.

The HEADS UP program provides a step by step guide on everything concussion related and the program further enhances players and members overall game safety.

All NWBA members are encouraged to review the educational and training materials. During Individual Registration, registrants will be required to acknowledge that the NWBA has provided this concussion educational and training materials.

The NWBA thanks you for your continued support and cooperation in providing a safe environment for our athletes.
