The Battle for the NWBA Preseason NIT Championship Continues

RICHMOND, VA – The EJ Wade Arena was full of excitement during the second day of competition at the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Preseason National Invitation Tournament presented by CarMax at the Virginia Commonwealth University Stuart C. Siegel Center. Today's schedule included 25 games across Adult Division II, Adult Division III and Junior Varsity Division. 

The Nassau Kings started their second day with a strong outing against the San Antonio being led by Chris St. Remy with 28 points. The Spurs were given a 11 point performance by Brent Norris, but that was not enough as the Kings won 58-40. The Delaware Destroyers looked to rebound as former Junior Division standout Adrien Burnett scored 22 points in a nail bitter 52-47 against the Sportable Rim Riders. The Fort Lauderdale Sharks rolled into today’s action against the Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets. The Sharks received a great shooting performance by Arnold Barnes for 20 of the team's 57 points. The Hornets received 15 points from Peter Morgan, though still fell to the Sharks 57-47. Charlottesville Cardinals won another game controlled start to finish 56-27 against the Magee Spokesman. The Charlottesville Cardinals played a strong game with a 54-48 victory over the Nassau Kings. Brandon Rush scored 17 points for the Cardinals and Mike Kelly led the score sheet for the Kings with 16 points. David Wilkes scored 15 points in the first half allowing the Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets to beat the Sportable Rim Riders 75-31. The San Antonio Spurs looked to continue their winning ways with a 16 point performance from Nakia Merrttie to blow past the Magee Spokesman 54-38. The pool play wrapped for Adult Division II with Fort Lauderdale Sharks playing the Delaware Destroyers. Manuel Rodriguez of the Sharks led the scoring for the game with 10 points for the first half and 16 for the game. The Sharks bested the Destroyers 59-34.

The Junior Varsity Division started the morning with a match-up of the Courage Kenny Jr. Rolling Timberwolves leading 30-14 at halftime against the Charlotte Jr. Rollin’ Hornets. The Jr. Timberwolves cruised to a 54-23 victory over the Hornets. The TIRR Memorial Herman Jr. Hotwheels started the day red hot as they beat the Katie’s Komets 73-26. Garrett Castillo led the Hotwheels with a stunning 24 points. The RHI Racers received a great performance from AJ Hummer as he accounted for 24 points in a 45-13 victory over the Sportable Spokes. The Fairfax Falcons won 32-22 against the Bridge II Jr. Thunder, as Daniel Malloy dropped 15 points for the Falcons. The Jr. Timberwolves were led by 20-point performances by Grady Gordon and Jack Pierre to a 66-24 victory over the Katie’s Komets. A well rounded team performance was put in by the Jr. Hotwheels as they were led by Dustin Stallberg with 20 points in a offensive explosion 74-20 against the Rollin’ Hornets. The RHI Racers beat the Jr. Thunder 53-19, as Nick Oman scored 12 of his 18 points in the first half. The Fairfax Falcons had a great match-up against the Sportable Spokes 46-30, as Kidus Ali led all scoring with 19 points. The RHI Racers led start to finish in the first semifinal game of the Junior Varsity Division as they beat the Jr. Rolling Timberwolves 45-32. Nick Oman of the RHI Racers led all scoring with 20 points and Darius Jackson scored 12 points for the Jr. Rolling Timberwolves. The Jr. Hotwheels continued their dominating play in the tournament with a 64-16 victory against the Fairfax Falcons in the second semi-final game of the Junior Varsity Division.

The Adult Division III showcased five games throughout the day on Saturday. The day started with a defensive focused contest of the Spartanburg Pistons outlasting the Virginia Sun Wheelers 31-24. The second game of the morning was the RCRC Lightning storming to a 57-38 win against the Pistons. The Pittsburgh SteelWheelers kicked off their day and afternoon with a 56-32 victory against the Virginia Sun Wheelers. The SteelWheelers continued their success with a 41-32 game in the win column against the Pistons. The evening ended for the Adult Division III with a 22 point victory for the RCRC Lightning ending 50-28 against the Sun Wheelers.

The NWBA Preseason NIT presented by CarMax is held in conjunction with the first annual National Wheelchair Basketball Week, a week-long celebration of wheelchair basketball and the progress the sport has made since founded in 1948.
