Weekend Recap: October 21-22nd

This past weekend, October 21-22, the NWBA hosted several events including the NWBA Preseason NIT Presented by Carmax in Richmond, Virginia, National Wheelchair Basketball Week, Norco Rolling Devils Wheelchair Basketball Tournament, Duel in the Desert, as well as several individual games. 

NWBA Preseason NIT Presented by Carmax

The NWBA Preseason National Invitation Tournament (NIT) presented by CarMax this past weekend in Richmond, Virginia featured competitive games in Adult Division II, Adult Division III, and Junior Varsity Division.

The Nassau Kings of Elmont, New York took first place in Adult Division II. The Charlottesville Cardinals of Charlottesville, Virginia finished strong in a 54-45 defeat over the Fort Lauderdale Sharks of Fort Lauderdale, Florida and claimed second place.

The third place game for the Adult III Division included the Spartansburg Pistons of Forest City, North Carolina and the Virginia Sunwheelers of Virginia Beach, Virginia. The Pistons finished strong beating the Sunwheelers 40 -26. The championship game for the Adult Division III was between the RCRC Lightning of Columbia, South Carolina and the Pittsburgh Steelwheelers of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The Lightning captured the title 43-39.

The Junior Varsity Division champions were the TIRR Herman Memorial Jr. Hotwheels of Houston, Texas displaying a dominating performance throughout the weekend. The RHI Racers of Indianapolis, Indiana took second place and the Minnesota Jr. Timberwolves of Minneapolis, Minnesota rounded out the top three.

National Wheelchair Basketball Week

The NWBA Preseason NIT presented by CarMax was held in conjunction with the first annual National Wheelchair Basketball Week (NWBW), a week-long celebration of wheelchair basketball and the progress the sport has made since founded in 1948.

The week was filled with history, contests, and prizes.

The NWBA thanks all of the players, coaches, and fans who participated.

 

Norco Rolling Devils Wheelchair Basketball Tournament

The City of Norco Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services hosted the Norco Rolling Devils Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at Riley Gymnasium in Norco, California.

The eight teams who competed from the Adult Division were: Boyle Heights Kodiaks of Hunting Park, California; Rancho Renegades of Downey, California; NMCSD Wolfpack of San Diego, California; San Diego Silverbacks of San Diego, California; Shasta Lakers of Redding, California; Los Angeles Hotwheels of Los Angeles, California; Los Angeles Clippers Chairmen of Los Angeles, California; and the PossAbilities Rolling Bears of Loma Linda, California.

The NMCSD Wolfpack capped off a 5-0 record this weekend in the Championship Game against the Boyle Heights Kodiaks 59-37. The Los Angeles Hotwheels won third place in their defeat against the Los Angeles Clippers Chairmen 55-41.

Tournament awards included Matt Grashen of the NMCSD Wolfpack for Most Valuable Player and Jesus Duran of the Kodiaks for Most Inspirational Player. The Shasta Lakers received Most Inspirational Team.

 

Duel in the Desert:

Ability360 hosted Duel in the Desert, a two-day tournament in Phoenix, Arizona. The tournament featured five teams in Adult Divisions, I, II, and III including: the Phoenix Banner Suns of Phoenix, Arizona; the University of Arizona of Tucson, Arizona; Arizona Storm of Tucson, Arizona; and the Tucson Lobos of Tucson, Arizona.

The University of Arizona DI placed first followed by their DII team in second. The Phoenix Suns and the Arizona Storms played for third place. The Suns took the lead and finished strong in a 52-34 defeat over the Storms.
