Infantryman Anthony Farve

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO - University of Arizona’s Anthony Farve of Tucson, Arizona served as an Army Infantryman from 2004-2009 with the 3rd Brigade 2nd Infantry Division.

The infantry is the main land combat force of the Army. Infantrymen are responsible for defending the country against threats through capturing, destroying and repelling enemy ground forces.

In 2007 on March 17, Farve’s vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED). Several soldiers, including Farve, were injured in the IED attack. Farve suffered from a shattered shin and an open fracture. His platoon immediately called for a medical evaluation for the injured soliders.

The injured soldiers were immediately taken to Baghdad, Iraq to be were treated. Some of the injured soldiers were able to resume their positions in Iraq. The Favre and the other remaining injured soldiers were sent to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

At the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Farve’s leg was salvaged, which enabled him to keep his limb. In 2014, Farve decided to amputee his leg for a higher quality of life. 

Six months after his amputation, Farve found wheelchair basketball at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Farve played there for a year before he moved to Kansas and began playing for the Kansas Wheelhawks of Lawrence, Kansas.

After playing for the Kansas Wheelhawks for a year, Farve was recruited by the University of Arizona of Tucson, Arizona where he currently plays.  Farve is in his second season with the University of Arizona and lives with his wife Sarah Farve in Tucson.

The National Wheelchair Basketball Association excited to celebrate “Veteran’s Week”, which highlights the United States Armed Forces within the NWBA. The United States Armed Forces consist of Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. The United States has recognized this observed holiday since 1918, though under the name Veteran’s Day since 1954. The NWBA’s Veteran’s Week will conclude on 99th university of Veteran’s Day on Saturday, November 11.
