Weekend Recap (Nov. 3-5)

This past weekend, November 3-5, held a lot of excitement with various NWBA sanctioned events all over the country.

 

Courage Kenny Classic (Nov. 4-5) 

The Courage Kenny Sports & Recreation Department hosted the 2017 Courage Kenny Classic at Hastings High School, Hastings, Minnesota. This year is the 35th year anniversary of the Courage Kenny Classic and served as a 2017 NWBA Junior Division Northern Regional Qualifying Tournament.

For the Prep Division, the Minnesota Rolling Rowdies of Minneapolis, Minnesota defeated the Nebraska Red Dawgs of Omaha, Nebraska 36-14. The third place was swept by the SportAbility Rolling Panthers of Prairie City, Iowa.

The Male and Female MVP’s of the Prep Division were Jenna DeJong of the Nebraska Red Dawgs and David Petit of the Minnesota Rolling Rowdies.

The Varsity Division Championship Game was dribbled out between the Blaze Sports Hawks of Norcross, Georgia and the RHI Racers of Indianapolis, Indiana. It was a close game with the Hawks and Racers throwing up points left and right but the Hawks were able to pull away closing the game 64-52. Third place went to the Minnesota Jr Rolling Timberwolves of Minneapolis, Minnesota after they defeated Nebraska Red Dawgs Varsity Team of Omaha, Nebraska in a close game of 47-42. 

Varsity Division’s MVP’s include Jordan Kozloski of the Blaze Sports Hawks and Nick Oman of the RHI Racers.

NC Winter Classic (Nov. 4-5)

The North Carolina Winter Classic was a two-day tournament presented by Abilities Unlimited of the Carolinas, Bridge II Sports, and the Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets of Matthew, North Carolina held at the Porter Ridge High School, Indian Trail, North Carolina.

The Prep Division included ten games of round robin play with the Lakeshore Lakers of Birmingham, Alabama finishing strong with a perfect 4-0 record. The Charlotte Rollin' Hornets Prep (Purple team) of Mathews, North Carolina earned a spot in the Championship game with their second victory over the BlazeSports Hawks- Prep of Norcorss, Georga. Charlotte Prep-Purple won the Prep Division when Julian Rodriguez drained a free throw with no time on the clock.

Seth Horne from the Lakeshore Lakers was the MVP. All Tournament recognition went to Preston Howell and Sadie Absher of the Rollin' Hornets Prep-Purple team, Hudson Tucker of the Roger C. Pease Rollin’ Tigers of Greenville, South Carolina and Tanner Adkins and Zach Armas of the BlazeSports Jr. Hawks.

Cade Coleman of the Rollin Tigers won the Hustle Award and Eve Madden of the Rollin Tigers and Ben Vondrak of the Jr. Hawks were the Shark (game) Champs!

The Varsity Division also included ten games of round robin play with the Charlotte Rollin' Hornets Varsity of Matthews, North Carolina also finished with a perfect 4-0 record. The Lakeshore Lakers play hard in the Championship match with the Hornets. The UAH Chargers of Huntsville, Alabama finished third in a match against the Bridge II Sports Jr. Thunder of Durham, North Carolina. Joshua Daniels of the Lakeshore Lasers was the 3-point and Hot Shot Champion. Tyler Tippins was the Varsity Division MVP. The Hustle Award was earned by Zion Redington of Music City. All Tournament recognition went to Lizzy Becker and Andre' DeWitt of the Rollin' Hornets, Jonah Daniels of Lakeshore, Miles Hill of the Jr. Thunder and Darian Ross of UAH Chargers.

Buckeye PVA Cup (Nov. 4-5)

The Cleo Dumaree Athletic Complex of Columbus, Ohio hosted the Buckeye PVA Cup this weekend.

Adult Division II Champions were the Miami Valley Raptors of Xenia, Ohio followed by the RHI Pacers of Indianapolis, Indiana, 66-36. The third-place game was between the Music City Lightning of Franklin, Tennessee and the Louisville Spokes and Spires of Louisville, Kentucky. The Music City Lightning barely defeated the Spokes in a close game of 52-46.

 

Keep up the Pace Jr. Wheelchair Basketball Tournament (Nov. 4-5)

The Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital hosted the Keep up the Pace Jr. Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at the Mary Free Bed YMCA, Grand Rapids, Michigan for the Varsity and Prep Divisions November 4-5.

The Mary Free Bed Jr. Pacers of Grand Rapids, Michigan took first in Varsity Division and the Turnstone Flyers Prep team of Fort Wayne, Indiana was first in the Prep Division.

The tournament was double round-robin. Team placements were based off results from the round-robin, no championship game was held.

 

4th Annual Pete Corapi Memorial Wheelchair Basketball Tournament (Nov. 4-5)

The 4th Annual Pete Corapi Memorial Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at the James Lee Community Center, Falls Church, Virginia was hosted by the Fairfax Falcons Paralympic Sports of Fairfax, Virginia.

Home team, Fairfax Falcons Prep Team of Fairfax Falcons won the Prep Division Championship against the Bennett Blazers Prep Team of Baltimore, Maryland, 41-29. Katie's Komets Prep Team of Collegeville, Pennsylvania followed in third over the New York Rolling Fury Prep Team of Dix Hills, New York.

Lixi Tiedemann of the Bennett Blazers received the Pete Corapi Spirit Award and Kidus Ali of the Fairfax Falcons received the MVP award for the Prep Division.

The Sportable Spokes of Richmond, Virginia claimed the Varsity Division championship title in a nail-biting game against the Fairfax Falcons of Fairfax, Virginia. The Sportable Spokes stole the title with a three-point lead, 36-33. The Ryan Martin Foundation Trojans of Simsbury, Connecticut took third place in their defeat of the Bennett Blazers of Baltimore, Maryland, 35-16. Katie's Komets of Collegeville, Pennsylania placed fifth over the New York Rolling Fury of Dix Hills, New York.

Varsity award winners include Daniel Malloy of the Fairfax Falcons for the Pete Corapi Spirit Award and Josiah Knight of the Sportable Spokes for MVP.
