COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – Jimmy May has provided longtime service to this country, his community, his family and the adaptive sports industry. May is a 67-year-old disabled veteran of the Vietnam War. This December, May will have been in a wheelchair for 49 years.

May was injured in Vietnam on December 1, 1968.  At that time, he was in the United States Army serving with ‘The Big Red I’ Infantry Division.  May is the recipient of the Purple Heart, the Army Accommodation Medal and several other medals from his service in the U.S. Army. 

May has played wheelchair basketball for 45 years, he started his career with the Richmond Charioteers in 1973 – 1981. In 1981 May formed the Richmond Rimriders and served as player and coach from 1981 – 2014. May is now the head coach of the Sportable Rimriders of Adult Division II. May has also contributed to wheelchair basketball by hosting various tournaments and serving on NWBA committees.

May is involved in a variety of wheelchair sports. May is the only veteran who has attended the National Veteran’s Wheelchair Games for 37 times out of the 38 years of existence for the event. May has been a member of the American Wheelchair Bowling Association since 1971 and active member serving in various board positions.

May is a life-member of local chapters of the Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Mid-Atlantic Paralyzed Veterans Association Chapter.

May lives in Midlothian, VA with his wife of 48 years, Sue. He has two sons, Troy and Kevin. May is proud to have two grandchildren, a twelve-year-old granddaughter Savannah and a seven-year-old grandson Zachary.

The National Wheelchair Basketball Association is excited to celebrate “Veteran’s Week”. Veteran’s Week highlights the United States Armed Forces within the NWBA. The United States Armed Forces consist of Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard. The United States has recognized this observed holiday since 1918, though under the name Veteran’s Day since 1954. The NWBA’s Veteran’s Week will conclude on 99th university of Veteran’s Day on Saturday, November 11.
