Weekend Recap (Dec. 1-3)

 The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) offered several sanctioned events this past weekend in Missouri, Virginia, Michigan, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Maryland.
 

University of Missouri – Intercollegiate Tournament (Dec. 1-2)

The University of Missouri hosted an Intercollegiate Division Tournament this weekend at MizzouRec Columbia, Missouri. Teams that competed in this tournament included the Southwest Minnesota State University of Marshall, Minnesota; the Auburn University Tigers of Auburn, Alabama; University of Edinboro of Edinboro, Pennsylvania; University of Nebraska - Omaha of Omaha, Nebraska; University of Wisconsin - Whitewater Men of Whitewater, Wisconsin; the University of Missouri of Columbia, Missouri; and the University of Texas Arlington of Arlington, Texas.

University of Edinboro kicked off their tournament with a game against the Auburn University Tigers. Edinboro was able to secure the first win of the weekend, 43-33. Top scorers for Edinboro included Chayse Wolf with 16 points and Kevin Atherley with 18 points. The Auburn University Tigers were led by Blake Loftin, with 11 points and Hunter Alvis with 12 points.

Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) played a great game against the University of Edinboro. The Fighting Scots were led by Wolf (28 points) and Atherley (19 points) gain in a 60-47 win over the Mustangs of SMSU. Top scorers for SMSU included Jesus Villa with 22 points and Matthew Talbot with 15 points.

Herman Key Jr. Memorial Holiday Tournament (Dec. 1-3)

The 8th ranked Charlottesville Cardinals of Adult Division II hosted the 17th Annual Herman Key Jr. Memorial Holiday Tournament at the Walton Middle School, 4217 Red Hill Rd, Charlottesville, Virginia. Bracket play was played until Saturday afternoon until the elimination rounds begun.

Saturday’s action included the Adult Division II Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets of Cornelius, North Carolina battling the Adult Division II Charlottesville Cardinals  of Charlottesville, Virginia 52-48 in the first semi-final. Meanwhile the Adult Division II Magee Spokesmen of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania edged the Adult Division II Sportable Rim Riders of Richmond, Virginia 52-48.

The Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets defeated the Magee Spokesmen 48-45 to capture the championship of the 17th Annual Herman Key, Jr. Memorial Holiday Tournament. The host, Charlottesville Cardinals took third place after defeating the Sportable Rim Riders 64-32 in the third place game.  

The Harrisonburg Cardinals or Orange, Virginia downed the Shepherd Stealers of Atlanta, Georgia 60-54 to claim the Adult Division III Championship crown.

Mike Hudson of the Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets was the tournament MVP. The All-Tournament consisted of  David Wilkes and Tim Caldwell of the Charlotte Rollin’ Hornets, , Jeremy Smith and Joey Leavitt of the Charlottesville Cardinals, Mickey Morin of the Harrisonburg Cardinals, Tom McNaughton and Frank Johnson of the Magee Spokesmen, Treyvon Smith of the Shepherd Stealers, and Dwayne Veney and Matthew Deans of the Sportable Rim Riders. Patria Brown of the Shepherd Stealers won the Sportsmanship Trophy.

3rd Annual Mary Free Bed Invitational (Dec. 2-3)

The Mary Free Bed Pacers of Adult Division I and Mary Free Bed Rollin Drive of Adult Division III both of Grand Rapids, Michigan were proud to offer the 3rd Annual Mary Free Bed Invitational at the Mary Free Bed YMCA, Grand Rapids, Michigan this past Saturday and Sunday.

The  Adult Division I Dallas Mavericks of Arlington, Texas went undefeated with a 5-0 record and capture the tournament title.  The Adult Division I Mary Free Bed Pacers came in second place with two losses and three wins. The Cleveland Wheelchair Cavaliers of Brunswick, Ohio fought hard for a win against the Miami Valley Raptors of Xenia, Ohio winning the game 68-63.

The Turnstone Bandits of Fort Wayne, Indiana claimed the Adult Division III title with a record of 4-0. The RHI Pacers of Indianapolis, Indiana took second place with their only loss coming at the hands of the tournament champion Bandits, 52-34.

The Adult Division II RIM Detroit Diehards of Detroit, Massachusetts gave the RHI Pacers a run for their money this past weekend in a thrilling game ending 46-45 advantage Pacers.

Bennett Blazers Weekend of Games (Dec. 2-3)

The Bennett Blazers of Baltimore, Maryland hosted a weekend of games this weekend at the Kennedy Krieger Institute, 3835 Greenspring Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland for Junior Prep and Junior Varsity teams. Nine teams competed throughout the weekend.

The Fairfax Falcons - Varsity of Fairfax, Virginia showcased their stout defense in 47-4 game against the Ryan Martin Foundation Trojans of Simsbury, Connecticut. The Ryan Martin Foundation Trojans "rebounded" offensively in a match-up against the Bennett Blazers, but still came up short in a 36-25 Blazers win.

On Sunday there was some great contest including a game between the Bennett Blazers and the Fairfax Falcons - Varsity. The Falcons eventually gained control and finished the game winning by a score of 33-21. A key Prep Division game included the Katie’s KOMETS of Collegeville, Pennsylvania in a win against the New York Rolling Fury - Prep 22-10.

Top scorers of the weekend include Daniel Carter, Jordan McCown, and Breanna Clark of Katie’s KOMETS, Ruby Elbert and Lixi Tiedemann of the Bennett Blazers, Kidus Ali and Daniel Malloy of the FairFax Falcons, J.P. James Pollard of Bennett Blazers Prep, Jeremy Tantsits of Ryan Martin Foundation Trojans.

Seattle Jam (Dec. 2-3)

Seattle Adaptive Sports hosted the Seattle Jam at the West Seattle HS, 3000 California Ave W, Seattle, Washington. Eight teams, including host team Seattle Sonics of Seattle, Washington competed in Varsity Division and Adult Division I.

West Coast Conference Bid Regional Junior Wheelchair Basketball Tournament (Dec. 2-3)

This past Saturday and Sunday, December 2-3, Arizona Disabled Sports hosted  West Coast Conference Bid Regional Junior Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at the Ability360 Sports Center. Junior Division athletes and teams competed for two bids to the 2018 National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament presented by ABC Medical on April 12-15 in Louisville, KY.

The weekend was filled with exciting games at the West Coast Conference Bid Regional Junior Wheelchair Basketball Tournament. The Dallas Jr. Mavericks of Arlington, Texas squeaked by the Lakeshore Lakers of Birmingham, Alabama with a one-point victory, 49-48. Another close game was between the San Diego Hammers of San Diego, California and BORP Jr. Road Warriors of San Lorenzo, California.The San Diego Hammers captured a 49-37 win. The Denver Jr. Rolling Nuggest of Longmont, Colorado found their first win of the season with a ten-point victory against the Rancho Renegades of Downey, California ending 34-24.

The weekend ended with the Championship game between the Lakeshore Lakers and the Utah Rush of Henefer, Utah. The Utah Rush provided a dominating perfromance over the Lakeshore Lakers 72-50 to claim their title. Both teams, Rush and Lakers, received bids to the National Junior Wheelchair Basketball Tournament at the 2018 NWBT.

Midwest Conference Tournament Hosted by Oklahoma Rollin' Trojans (Dec. 2-3)

The Oklahoma Rollin' Trojans of Collinsville, Oklahoma hosted five teams competed in an Adult Division II tournament this past weekend. The Northeast Oklahoma Adaptive Sports hosted the Midwest Conference Tournament at Chandler Park 6500 W 21st St. Tulsa, Oklahoma.Competing teams included the Oklahoma Rollin' Trojans of Collinsville, Oklahoma; the Madonna Magic of Lincoln, Nebraska; and the Kansas Wheelhawks of Lawrence, Kansas.
