IWBF World Championship Pools Announced

On Monday, January 29th, the 2018 IWBF World Championships pools for men’s and women’s wheelchair basketball were announced. The World Championships will take place from August 16-25 at the Wilhelmsburger Inselparkarena in Hamburg, Germany, which marks the first time Germany will host the event. There will be 16 men’s teams and 12 women’s teams that will compete for the World Championship title.

In the men’s tournament Pool A, the host country, Germany, was placed with Canada, Iran and the African champions, Morocco. Because they will be hosting the World Championships, Germany was given the opportunity to choose which pool they wanted to compete in after each pool had three of their teams drawn.

The U.S. men’s team will face South Korea, Poland, and the Bronze medalists from the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, Great Britain in Pool B.

The European Champions, Turkey, will headline Pool C, which features Brazil, Japan and Italy.

The reigning World Champions, Australia, will face Argentina, The Netherlands and the Silver medalists from the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, Spain in Pool D.

In the women's tournament, the reigning World Champions, Canada, will headline Pool A. They will face Australia, Brazil, Great Britain, Spain and the reigning Bronze medalists from the 2014 World Championships and 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, The Netherlands in Pool A.

In Pool B, the reigning Gold medalists form the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, The United States, will face Algeria, Argentina, China, France and the reigning silver medalists from the 2014 World Championships and 2016 Rio Paralympic Games, Germany.

Group A: Australia, Brazil, Canada, Great Britain, Spain, The Netherlands

Group B: Algeria, Argentina, China, France, Germany, USA
