The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) is delighted to announce that the 2021 Toyota National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament (NIWBT) will be hosted by the University of Alabama.

This decision was made in light of unforeseen circumstances, but with strong support from the adapted sports staff at the University of Alabama.

The University of Alabama will be well prepared for this tournament due to their significant experience hosting wheelchair basketball events. Furthermore, they have adhered to Covid-19 safety protocols required by the Intercollegiate Division to ensure the safety of their events during the pandemic.

Dug Jones, President of the Intercollegiate Division of the NWBA, welcomes the new host.

“We are very excited to be playing this year’s NIWBT at the University of Alabama. Their facilities and their event management team are both elite. It will be an awesome event,” he said.

After not being able to execute the Toyota NIWBT last year due to Covid-19, the excitement of the NWBA to provide a safe and memorable tournament experience is the top priority, and the University of Alabama is an incredible host to have as a part of the team in pursuit of that goal.

The NIWBT will be held inside the Stran-Hardin Arena, and will still occur March 10 - March 13, 2021.

The NIWBT is the National Championship Tournament for the NWBA Intercollegiate Division and features the most elite collegiate wheelchair basketball teams in the nation, representing 11 universities across nine states. The NWBA Intercollegiate Division is currently comprised of ten Men’s and five Women’s teams, who all share the intention of becoming National Champions this year.

Recently, the Men’s and Women’s titles for the NIWBT were both won by the University of Alabama in 2019.

More information regarding the 2021 NIWBT will be provided when available.
