WICHITA, KS - On March 31, 2022, the NWBA Annual Assembly was hosted in-person and virtually in conjunction with the 2022 NWBA Toyota Adult and Junior Wheelchair Basketball National Championships presented by ABC Medical in Wichita, KS. In addition to the “State of The NWBA”, membership elected the President of the NWBA Board of Directors and voted on NWBA Bylaw amendment proposals.

President Election

Darlene Hunter was elected President to fill the one-year term remaining for the previously elected President, Tim Fox. Fox announced his resignation from the President role in late 2021 allowing for the Governance Committee to announce the open position to membership and allowing for the position to be elected by membership (in accordance with the NWBA Bylaws).

Hunter was previously elected as the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee Athlete Advisory Council Representative (USOPC AAC) for the NWBA in 2020—a position which holds an athlete director seat with the NWBA Board of Directors. Hunter will assume the President role at the first Board of Directors meeting held after the election which is scheduled for May 16, 2022 (in accordance with the NWBA Bylaws). Hunter will continue in the USOPC AAC Representative role until assuming the President role with the NWBA Board of Directors. An election will be hosted in the coming months to elect a replacement to fill the two years remaining in Hunter’s term as USOPC AAC Representative.

Hunter stated, “I am honored to continue to serve in leadership with this newly elected President role. Having been involved for 20 years, I am passionate about our sport and the positive impact it has made in my life and lives of so many others. I am excited to bring an athlete perspective to the highest level of the organization and continue the hard work of those before me in the advancement of the sport of wheelchair basketball.”

Bylaw Amendments

Membership voted on 14 Amendment Proposals and all were passed to update the NWBA Bylaws. The Bylaw Amendment Proposals along with their passed status are detailed on the NWBA Annual Assembly webpage (link below). The implementation of the amended bylaws are typically put into practice within 30 days or as soon as practicable and the updated Bylaws are posted on the Governance Documents page of the NWBA website (link below).
