How to Start a NWBA Team/Program

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) is excited to share this friendly "Save the Date" for the upcoming sixteenth installment of the NWBA Webinar Series presented by ABC Medical, an informational series focused on helping NWBA members build knowledge, skills, and abilities on focused topics. Creating resources for NWBA members is critical to helping sustain and grow the sport. Webinar topics are selected based on membership feedback and are presented by NWBA members skilled in those particular areas.

The next webinar, "How to Start a NWBA Team/Program", will take place on Wednesday, October 5th at 6:30 p.m. Mountain time and will be presented by Lisa Elliston and Megan Hyman. Lisa and Megan plan to educate attendees on the steps of starting a wheelchair basketball program in their community. Please save the date and join us. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Lisa Elliston

After moving to Mississippi in 2012, Elliston found that the state didn’t have a wheelchair basketball team in the NWBA's Junior Division. After recruiting children in the Jackson (MS) area, Elliston started a team under the local Adult DIII team’s non-profit. In September 2014 Elliston help found the non-profit, Mississippi Youth Wheelchair League, Inc. Lisa has served on the Junior Division Executive since 2017; serving previously as 1st Vice President (2017-19) and currently as President (2019-present). Ellison has a wealth of experience in the broadcasting/marketing world and professional experience working at financial advisor.

Elliston and her husband Dave currently live in Northern California to be closer to her parents. Elliston's son, Jonathan Elliston has played in Prep, Varsity and Intercollegiate levels of the NWBA. 

Megan Hyman

Megan Hyman is a pediatric occupational therapist with 20 years’ experience working in early intervention, outpatient, school-based, and community environments.  Megan serves as Pediatric Community Program Manager at Brooks Rehabilitation, overseeing the Pediatric Recreation Program.  After working with patients & families in skilled therapy, Megan discovered her passion for programmatic development.  She saw the opportunity to bridge therapeutic services with community integration on a larger scale.  She started the Pediatric Recreation Program in 2016, igniting her love for community collaboration, advocacy, and FUN!  The youth wheelchair basketball program at Brooks started in 2018 as a recreational sport, with 8 players.  In 2019, the Brooks BullSharks registered with the NWBA in the Junior Division for the Prep level of play.  In 2022, many of those original athletes competed in the Varsity level of play in the Junior Division, winning the 2022 NWBA Varsity Invitational Wheelchair Basketball Championship.

Megan lives in Jacksonville, Florida with her husband, 2 children, and dog.  She loves the University of Miami, being outdoors (in the heat J), gardening, and cooking.
