Rollin' Hornets Purple Remain Atop Ranking; Roger C. Peace New #1

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO – The Junior Division Executive Committee of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) have announced January Power Rankings for Varsity and Prep levels of play.

Junior Division teams saw lots of action and great games in late December and through January.  Great play at the Whitewater, Kansas City Crossroads, and Katie Kirlin tournaments provided challenges and opportunities to show how teams are coming together and improving as the season turns to the home stretch and push towards Nationals.  In the Varsity Division, the Kansas City Kings “A” squad met those challenges and bested a strong Courage Center Timberwolves team to win at Whitewater and push into the top three of the rankings. Strong showings by the Utah Rush, the RMF Trojans, and the Kansas City “B” squad shook up the middle of the rankings and added spice to debates over who will grab spots in the final Varsity draw. As not uncommon in the middle of the season, several teams played parts of all of tournaments missing some key contributors which provided upsets and less predictable results, but several big tournaments in the next few weeks will provide chances for teams to make their case on the hardwood.

In the prep division, RHI dealt Kansas City its first loss of the season which propels the Roger C. Peace Rolling Tigers to the top of the ranking.  KC stays at the two spots on the strength of its overall record with RHI sitting right behind and ready to push its case harder in the final weeks. As teams look towards the National Tournament, The Courage Kenny Rolling Rowdies notched a win against the Cincinnati Dragons to push into the top 16 and state their case for a trip to Wichita.

The top 16 ranked teams for Varsity will earn an invite to play in the NWBA Varsity Wheelchair Basketball National Championships. Varsity teams ranked 17-32 may receive an invite to participate in the NWBA Varsity Invitational Wheelchair Basketball Tournament. The top 16 ranked teams from Prep are offered an invitation to participate in the NWBA Prep Wheelchair Basketball National Championships. If a team does not accept their bid for postseason play, invitations will be sent to the next team, in order of ranking, until all tournaments are filled with teams.

The rankings are developed on a monthly basis by the Junior Division Ranking Working Group, a diverse group of team representatives and coaches within the Junior Division.
