Call for Athlete Applications: 2025 FISU World University Games

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) is excited to announce an AMAZING NEW OPPORTUNITY!

Presenting the opening of athlete applications to be a member of the U.S. Men’s and Women’s 3x3 Wheelchair Basketball Teams for the 2025 International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Games (WUG). The 2025 WUG will be held in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany, from July 16-27; the games for wheelchair basketball will occur from July 17 to July 20. 

Submitting an application is REQUIRED to be considered for the U.S. Men’s and Women’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball teams that will complete at the 2025 WUG. The final rosters for the 2025 WUG will include four athletes for the women’s team and four athletes for the men’s team. 

The application deadline is

Wednesday, December 6. 


ATHLETE ELIGIBILITY

In addition to submitting and completing all of the requirements of the Athlete Application, to be eligible for selection, athletes must also meet the following requirements: 

  1. U.S. Citizenship: Athletes must be U.S. citizens and eligible to obtain a U.S. passport, which must remain valid for at least six months after the Closing Ceremonies of the GAMES.
     
  2. Age Range: Athletes must be born between January 1, 1997, and December 31, 2007. 
     
  3. Education Requirements: Athletes must have completed at least one 3-credit course towards a degree or diploma at an accredited college or university within the year prior to the GAMES. Incoming freshmen and transfer students are typically eligible. The standard is that athletes are “progressing toward a degree.” Athletes who earned their degree within the year prior to the GAMES are also eligible.
     
  4. Honor Code Agreement: Athletes must sign the “UniUSA Team Honor Code and Code of Conduct” form.
     
  5. Waiver and Release: Athletes must sign the “UniUSA Team Authorizations, Waiver, and Release Form.”

These eligibility requirements are set forth by University USA (UniUSA) and FISU World University Games.

The U.S. Men’s and Women’s 3x3 wheelchair basketball teams will be part of the UniUSA delegation that participates in the 2025 WUG. More information on UniUSA is available at https://www.usateam.org/.  


INTERNATIONAL WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL FEDERATION (IWBF) REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Comply with all International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) eligibility requirements. 
     
  2. An athlete must have, at the minimum, completed Stage 1 of the international classification process as defined by the IWBF prior to the WGU. 
     
  3. A description of sport specific classification requirements and current athlete sport class status can be found here
     
  4. The technical regulations (i.e. playing rules) for this 3x3 competition will be in accordance with the most recent regulations of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation, available here.

SELECTION CAMP INFORMATION:

The Selection Camp for the U.S. teams for 2025 WUG will be held January 9-12, 2025 at the United States Performance Center (USPC) on the campus of University of North Carolina at Charlotte in Charlotte, NC.


TIMELINE:

  • Application Deadline – December 6
     
  • Invitations Sent – December 6-9
     
  • Selection Camp – January 9-12
     
  • Training Camp TBD - late May to late June*
     
  • 2025 World University Games – July 16-27, 2025 

*Detailed information on this camp occurring and dates/location will be shared as soon as possible.   


Cost to Participate

Participation on the final rosters for the 2025 World University Games is a “Pay-to-Play" opportunity.  The cost is projected to be approximately $4,000-$5,000 (the final cost will be provided to athletes chosen for the team, prior to their acceptance). The payment will be collected by the NWBA to help cover the following expenses while participating as a member of this United States Team/program; Team USA Apparel Package, Airfare, Ground Transportation, Lodging, Meals, and Event Fees.
