COLORADO, CO. – The Junior Division Executive Committee of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) has released the December 2024 power rankings for both the Varsity and Prep levels of play.
Rankings are developed monthly by the Junior Division Ranking Working Group, consisting of diverse team representatives and coaches from the Junior Division.
The Junior Division has had an action-packed fall season. Early results reveal a mix of rebuilding, retooling, and a few teams making their way to the top of junior wheelchair basketball. One constant, however, is the dominant play of the Lakeshore Lakers. The two-time defending NWBA Champions remain undefeated in early season action and hold firmly to the top spot in the rankings.
Hot on their heels are the Brooks BullSharks from Jacksonville, FL. The BullSharks feature a balanced and experienced team that excels on both ends of the court. In third place, the Kansas City Kings have quietly amassed an impressive 8-2 record. Their season highlights include a win over the strong seventh-ranked Dallas squad and split games against the fourth-ranked Rancho Halos and sixth-ranked Utah Rush. Sitting in the fifth spot, the RHI Racers have been on a roll, defeating all challengers except Lakeshore. With tougher matchups against other top-10 teams on the horizon, RHI is undoubtedly aiming to climb higher in the rankings in the new year.
In the Prep Division, teams are still finding their rhythm, leading to less consistent results compared to the senior circuit. One exception is the top-ranked Dallas Jr. Mavs, who boast an impressive 15-0 record following a strong performance at last spring's National Tournament. January will be a critical month for Dallas as they face off against competition outside their conference.
Ranked second in the Prep Division, the Atlanta BlazeSports Jr. Hawks have secured wins over the NY Fury and RHI while splitting games with the up-and-coming Fairfax Falcons.
As the temperatures drop, the Junior Division is set to heat up with several top-tier tournaments in January. Happy Holidays to all NWBA teams, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on the courts in the new year!
