COLORADO, CO. – The Junior Division Executive Committee of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) has released the January (2025) power rankings for both the Varsity and Prep levels of play.
Rankings are developed monthly by the Junior Division Ranking Working Group, consisting of diverse team representatives and coaches from the Junior Division.
It’s been a cold winter across much of the U.S., but Junior Division teams have been heating up the hardwood with tournaments from coast to coast. Teams from every conference traveled to Whitewater, Turnstone, and Atlanta to hone their skills and test their competition. In Atlanta, at the Big Peach Slam Jam, the RHI Racers outpaced all challengers to secure the top spot in the rankings, bumping the Lakeshore Lakers to second place and the powerful Brooks Bullsharks to third. LWSRA’s Hawks capitalized on big wins at Whitewater and strong performances at Turnstone to roll into the top four.
The Utah Rush climbed to fifth place after splitting games with the Kansas City Kings and securing a narrow two-point win over the Rancho Halos at the Dallas Tournament. Meanwhile, Kansas City sits in sixth, holding onto their spot by the slimmest of margins thanks to their split with the strong Rancho squad. The Rancho Halos currently rank seventh, boasting an impressive second-place finish at Turnstone, where they fell to top-ranked RHI in an exciting tournament final.
While there’s plenty of excitement at the top of the rankings, many other teams have been making moves to climb the ladder. With the expanded draw for Nationals this year, the power rankings highlight more opportunities for the NWBA’s rebuilding and newer programs to leave their mark. Several programs boast strong second squads, and teams from smaller conferences or more distant locations can now use these rankings to prepare for an exciting tournament in Richmond in just a few months.
In the Prep Division, the top-ranked Dallas Jr. Mavs continue to rack up wins. Dallas remains undefeated, demonstrating great teamwork and the execution of an experienced squad. Behind Dallas, the Fairfax Falcons secured a win against BlazeSports and split games with the NY Rolling Fury to earn the second spot. The Falcons are gaining confidence and playing like a team determined to make their presence felt every time they take the court.
The BlazeSports Jr. Hawks hold the third spot with an impressive 15-2 record, despite not facing a team outside the top 20. NY’s Rolling Fury now sits comfortably in fourth, with key wins over strong Lakeshore and ATX squads. The Prep Division remains highly competitive, with exciting games ahead as teams gear up for the late-winter push toward Nationals.
Younger, less experienced teams have also broken into the expanded rankings. These squads are eager to learn from their peers and take the court in Richmond to showcase their growth and progress. Nationals are shaping up to be an incredible display of skill, development, and teamwork across all divisions.
