COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA), the National Governing Body for wheelchair basketball in the United States and home of Team USA, proudly celebrates the announcement that wheelchair basketball at the LA28 Paralympic Games will be hosted at one of Los Angeles’ most iconic venues — the Arena in Downtown LA, home to the LA Lakers and LA Sparks.

Set against the backdrop of the city’s legendary skyline, this world-class arena will serve as the stage for one of the Paralympic Games’ most popular and anticipated competitions. Its central location within the Downtown LA Games hub will offer unmatched access for athletes, fans, and media, creating a dynamic and inclusive experience.

With a history of hosting NBA championships, NHL games, and headline entertainment events, the Arena brings global prestige and is expected to deliver an electrifying atmosphere for the 2028 Paralympic wheelchair basketball tournament.

Gabriel Zangenfeind, Secretary General of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF), shared his excitement:

“We are excited for this announcement. The LA Downtown Arena sets the perfect stage for a true wheelchair basketball showtime. Playing in the historic basketball venue, which played a key role in elevating global basketball, will not only elevate the player and fan experience but also serve as global window to celebrate our game.”

The LA28 Paralympic Games will take place August 15–27, 2028, marking the first time the Paralympics will be hosted in Los Angeles. With all venues located within a 35-mile radius, the Games will prioritize reduced travel, athlete comfort, and fan engagement.

Wheelchair basketball joins other para sports set in Downtown LA, including goalball at the Peacock Theater and a multi-sport complex inside the Los Angeles Convention Center.

This venue announcement aligns with LA28’s strategic vision to deliver the most athlete- and fan-focused Paralympic Games to date—maximizing existing infrastructure while creating a lasting legacy of accessibility and inclusion.

As Team USA prepares for LA28, the NWBA is thrilled that the sport will be showcased on such a historic stage—one that reflects the talent, grit, and global impact of our athletes.
