ARLINGTON, TEXAS – The 2017 NWBA National Women's Wheelchair Basketball Tournament had an exciting second day of competition on the campus of University of Texas-Arlington.
The PossAbilities Shield Maidens and LWSRA Lady Hawks kicked off day two. The hot shooting continued for the Shield Maidens’ Courtney Ryan as she found the basket for 20 points. Ryan was supported by Shield Maidens teammate Jennifer Poist with 12 points. The LWSRA Lady Hawks were faced with early foul trouble with four fouls in the first half by Lindsey McGlinch. The foul trouble limited the lineup options for the LWSRA Lady Hawks with McGlinch, their leading scorer with 10 points, allowing the Shield Maidens to secure a victory, 50-18.
The last game of round robin play featured the host Lady Mavericks against the Utah Rush. The Lady Mavericks received an astonishing performance from Desiree Miller who accounted for 34 points in the game. Miller scored 18 points in the first half and 16 points in the second half. Even with the shooting performance by Miller and a great full court press by the Mavericks, the Rush kept the game close with a halftime score of 26-17. The Rush looked to Josie DeHart for their offense with 10 points for the game. With the help of Miller and company the Lady Mavericks pulled away in the second half with a final score of 48-30.
The Lady Mavericks entered bracket play as the #1 seed with a 3-0 record from round robin play. The Mavericks faced off against the Utah Rush, who finished 0-3 in round robin play. The Mavericks started fast and with good team ball involving all five starters. The Mavericks secured a 51-31 win against the Rush. The scoring leaders for the Mavericks were Mackenzie Soldan with 12 points and Desiree Miller with 10 points. The scoring leader for the Rush was Alejandra Ibanez with 8 points.
The PossAbilities Shield Maidens and the LWSRA Lady Hawks played in the No. 2 versus No. 3 seed game. The Shield Maidens got 14 points from both Courtney Ryan and Ana Vargas. The LWSRA Lady Hawks were led on offense by Zoe Voris with 14 points. The final scored of the game was 58-36 in favor of the Shield Maidens.
The LWSRA Lady Hawks and Utah Rush will start play tomorrow at 9 a.m. Central for third place. The Lady Mavericks and PossAbilities Shield Maidens will play for the 2017 National Women’s Wheelchair Basketball National Championship at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
