On Wednesday, March 21, Pat McCoy died in Las Vegas, Nevada, unexpectantly. McCoy touched numerous members through the NWBA and had many wheelchair basketball friends throughout the globe. McCoy is credited with the development of the sport in Las Vegas for junior and adult programs, as well as hosting numerous tournaments annually for athletes of all ages. He was a longtime NWBA Board member, serving up until 2016.

“With a heavy heart, the NWBA learned of the passing of Pat McCoy early this morning. Without a doubt, our community lost a committed friend and tireless advocate,” said NWBA President Sarah Castle. “Pat helped grow the sport of wheelchair basketball in the Las Vegas community for both the junior and adult divisions. As a board member, Pat advocated for the growth of the sport and often secured the resources necessary to encourage elite level play in the United States. His leadership in our community will be greatly missed and the whole organization offers our condolences to Pat’s friends and family.”

McCoy’s spirit will carry on throughout the NWBA family. He was best known for his generous support of adaptive sports, focusing on wheelchair basketball and softball. He was always behind the scenes working tireless to improve playing opportunities and increasing resources for athletes to compete in a local tournament or abroad.

“Pat McCoy was known as a generous, humorous and helping hand to many in the NWBA family,” said former NWBA President and friend Dickie Bryant. “He was always eager to help give his time and sometimes his money to help fellow athletes and members of the NWBA. Pat loved sports, especially wheelchair basketball and wheelchair softball. He did  a lot for both of these organizations and many of the disabled youth and young adults in the Las Vegas and Kansas City areas.”

The NWBA Women’s National Tournament will honor him this weekend in Carson, California, with a moment of silence.
