Rollin' Hornets Purple & Kansas City Kings open as #1 Ranked Teams

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO – The Junior Division Executive Committee of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) has announced the December Power Rankings for Varsity and Prep levels of play.

The first ranking for the Junior Division is in!  The season is off to a roaring start with most teams in action and plenty of excitement as teams adjust to the loss of seniors and the growth of the next generation of stars.  The Charlotte Rolling Hornets Purple are off to a fast start and locked down the top ranking on the basis of impressive wins over several top teams and taking home the Varsity Championships at the Queen City Classic. Rounding out the top four at Varsity are Lakeshore Lakers, Cincinnati Dragons, and Bennett Blazers who were all near the top at Nationals last season and promise many exciting match ups in the New Year.  The Kansas City Kings A squad sits fifth, but has already notched impressive wins over a strong bunch of Northern and Midwest Conference teams at the Mad City Invitational and will be a force to be reckoned with as play picks up in the coming weeks.

The Kansas City Kings have a bright future with the top ranked and undefeated Prep team in the nation, but the Roger C. Peace Rollin’ Tigers also remain undefeated and return an experienced Prep team demanding their own respect at the second spot in the rankings. As we approach the halfway mark of the season, the RHI Jr. Racers and the Bennett Blazers round out the top four teams for Prep.

January is packed with exciting tournaments that will provide most Junior Division teams the chance to test themselves and solidify positions in the rankings.

The top 16 ranked teams for Varsity will earn an invite to play in the NWBA Varsity Wheelchair Basketball National Championships. Varsity teams ranked 17-32 may receive an invite to participate in the NWBA Varsity Invitational Wheelchair Basketball Tournament. The top 16 ranked teams from Prep are offered an invitation to participate in the NWBA Prep Wheelchair Basketball National Championships. If a team does not accept their bid for postseason play, invitations will be sent to the next team, in order of ranking, until all tournaments are filled with teams.

The rankings are developed on a monthly basis by the Junior Division Ranking Working Group, a diverse group of team representatives and coaches within the Junior Division.
