COLORADO SPRINGS, CO – The Board of Directors for the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) have announced the appointment of David Shaffer as the organization's new Chief Executive Officer, effective April 3, 2023. The appointment is one of several staff changes to NWBA leadership.
Shaffer joins the longest standing and largest Disabled Sports Organization in the world from Ronald McDonald House Jacksonville, FL where he spent the last five years and served as Chief Executive Officer. During his time at RMH, Shaffer delivered strategic leadership and vision while ensuring operational and financial integrity. He established numerous cost-saving and risk-mitigating measures and cultivated and expanded relationships with healthcare, corporate, foundation, and civic partners. Prior to his time with Ronald McDonald House, Shaffer spent three years with the Wounded Warrior Project’s National Operations Team, where his team was responsible for ensuring programmatic delivery and strategic alignment, calculating and reporting organizational analytics, and quarterly forecasting.
Ryan Martin, President of the Board of Directors commented, “After a comprehensive, nationwide search, we welcome David Shaffer to lead our organization as our Chief Executive Officer. David's past experience as a leader with brand name, national non-profits, combined with his proven track record in fundraising and leadership mentoring makes him a great choice as we prepare for the growth of wheelchair basketball.”
Shaffer will lead the NWBA staff and direct the day-to-day operations of the NWBA, with an emphasis on strengthening key relations, while increasing revenue through sponsorship and fundraising.
“I am extremely excited to join this amazing mission,” said Shaffer. “The next few years are going to be very important for the NWBA, and I am proud to be part of the fantastic group of staff and Board members responsible for guiding the organization’s next chapter.”
In addition to the appointment of Shaffer, the NWBA is excited to announce and congratulate the promotion of Brandon McBeain to NWBA Chief Operating Officer. McBeain joined the NWBA National Office staff as the Director of Membership Services and Programs in 2016. The promotion is well-deserved, as McBeain absorbed many of the day-to-day affairs during the search for the organization's new CEO.
“I welcome the opportunity to achieve more for our organization and sport in a new capacity,” said McBeain. “I want to continue my commitment towards one of the organizations’ core values of advancing the NWBA’s strive for excellence in all aspects of the organization.”
The NWBA also wants to thank Darlene Hunter for a job well-done in filling the role as Interim Chief Executive Officer. In addition to her other roles and involvement with the organization, Hunter graciously provided her time to help the NWBA forge forward during its exploration.
