Initial Selections Announced for the U.S. Men’s National Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO. - The National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) and the High Performance Selection Committee have announced the initial selection of sixteen athletes to the pool for consideration for the 2024 U.S. Men’s Wheelchair Basketball National Team. These selections were made after the 2024 USA Men’s Try-Out Camp hosted January 3-7 at the United States Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. 
   
The initial roster includes 12 athletes from the gold medal winning U.S. Men’s team from the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games that was held in Santiago, Chile, on November 17-26, 2023. The pool also includes eight athletes from the gold medal winning U.S. Men’s team from the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. 

The initially selected athletes will continue to train and compete at the Paralympic Game Team Selection Camp, scheduled for March 27-31 at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. Following the Paralympic Games Team Selection Camp, twelve (12) athletes and four (4) alternates will be named to the Paralympic Games Team, representing the U.S.A at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games in Paris, France on, August 28 – September 8, 2024. 
 
Steve Serio (Westbury, NY) is among those initially selected after helping the U.S. Men’s National Team win a gold medal at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games, leading the squad in assists per game (9.0). One of the most recognizable players in the sport, Serio brings a cache like no other, looking to make a fifth Paralympic roster with a robust trophy case that features three Paralympic medals (2012 bronze, 2016 gold, 2020 gold) and an ESPY Award for Best Male Athlete with a Disability in 2017. Serio is a four-time gold medalist at the Paralympic Games (2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023) and a five-time medalist at Worlds (2022 gold, 2018 silver, 2014 silver, 2010 bronze, 2006 silver). 
 
Brian Bell (Birmingham, AL) remains in the pool for consideration for the U.S. Men’s roster after winning gold at the 2023 Parapan American Games, where he was the team’s leading rebounder with 11.8 boards per contest. Bell’s resume speaks for itself, having been a member of the last two U.S. Men’s teams that won gold medals at the Paralympics (2020 and 2016). In addition to his Paralympic accolades, Bell is a three-time gold medalist at Parapans (2015, 2019 and 2023) and a three-time medalist at Worlds (2022 gold, 2018 silver, 2014 silver). Bell also won a NWBA Division I National Championship with the Golden State Road Warriors in 2023. 
 
Trevon Jenifer (Huntington, MD) is selected to the pool of athletes on the heels of claiming gold at the 2023 Parapan American Games. Jenifer’s trophy case also includes three Paralympic medals (2012 bronze, 2016 gold, 2020 gold), four Parapan Games gold medals (2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023) and three Worlds medals (2022 gold, 2018 silver, 2014 silver). 

Jake Williams (Milwaukee, WI) is among those initially selected after helping Team USA win a gold medal at the 2023 Parapan American Games, averaging a team-best 16.0 points per game. Williams is a two-time Paralympic medalist, claiming gold at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics and 2016 Rio Paralympics. In addition, he captured a gold medal at the 2022 World Championships. Williams, a University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Alum, returned to his alma mater to serve as head coach in 2022. 

Jorge Sanchez (Oakland, CA) remains in the pool for consideration after helping Team USA earn gold at the 2023 Parapan American Games. Sanchez looks to make his second Paralympic Team after assisting the U.S. to win gold at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. Sanchez is also a two-time medalist at Worlds (2018 silver, 2022 gold), a two-time gold medalist at the Parapan Games (2019 and 2023) and claimed gold at the 2017 IWBF Americas Cup. Sanchez also helped the Golden State Road Warriors secure the 2023 NWBA Division I National Championship. 
 
John Boie (Milton, WI) was initially selected after helping the U.S. Men’s National Team secure a gold medal at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games. Boie had a successful Paralympic debut in 2020, winning a gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. No shortage of accolades, Boie is a two-time medalist at Worlds (2018 silver, 2022 gold) and the Parapan American Games (2019 gold, 2023 gold) while securing gold at the 2017 IWBF Americas Cup.  

Ryan Neiswender (Lebanon, PA) is among the initial selections after helping Team USA capture gold at the 2022 World Championships. Neiswender was a member of the gold-medal winning squad at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. In addition, he has previously helped the U.S. secure gold medals at both the 2013 and 2017 IWBF Americas Cup.

Jorge Salazar (Delano, CA) remains in consideration after claiming gold at the 2023 Parapan American Games. Salazar was also a part of the Team USA squads that earned gold medals at the 2022 IWBF Americas Cup and World Championships. Salazar was first named to Team USA when he was a U.S. Men’s Senior National Team member that captured gold at the 2017 IWBF Americas Cup and was named an alternate for U.S. Men’s squads in 2019 and 2020. Salazar is a retired U.S. Marine Corps Corporal awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart recipient. 

Fabian Romo (Chicago, IL) will continue his effort to be selected to his sixth Team USA roster after representing the U.S. at the 2023 Parapan American Games, where he helped the team win a gold medal. Romo was also a contributing U.S. Men’s squad member who claimed gold at the 2022 World Championships and America Cup. In addition to being an alternate for the U.S. Men’s roster in 2020, Romo earned his first Team USA experience in 2017 at the IWBF Under 23 (U23) America’s Zonal Qualifier and IWBF U23 World Championships. 

Talen Jourdan (Deerfield, WI) remains in the pool for consideration after contributing to a gold-medal performance at the 2023 Parapan American Games. Jourdan was also a contributing member of the U.S. Men’s teams that produced gold medal finishes at the 2022 World Championships, Americas Cup and the U.S. U23 Men’s team at the IWBF U23 American's Zonal Qualifier. 

Jeromie Meyer (Woodbine, IA) will continue his effort to be selected to his sixth Team USA roster after representing the U.S. at the 2023 Parapan American Games, where he helped the team win a gold medal. He was a member of the U.S. Men’s teams that secured gold medals at the 2022 World Championships and Americas Cup. Meyer earned his first national team roster spots at the IWBF U23 America’s Zonal Qualifier and IWBF U23 World Championships in 2017. 
 
AJ Fitzpatrick (Cedar Rapids, IA) remains in the pool for consideration on the heels of making his first-ever U.S. Men’s National Team appearance at the 2023 Parapan American Games, where he helped the team secure gold. Fitzpatrick is a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. 
 
Peter Berry (Houston, TX) is among those initially selected after helping the U.S. Men’s National Team secure a spot at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games with a gold medal at the Santiago 2023 Parapan American Games. Berry was a gold medal-winning U.S. Men's Senior National Team member at the 2022 IWBF Americas Cup. Collegiately, Berry plays at the University of Alabama, leading the Crimson Tide to a national championship in 2023 while also earning Second Team All-American laurels. 

Paul Schulte (Ann Arbor, MI) remains in the pool for consideration. One of the most decorated athletes in the sport, Schulte is a two-time Paralympic medalist, securing bronze at the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games and the London 2012 Paralympic Games. He is a four-time Medalist at Worlds (1998 gold, 2002 gold, 2006 silver and 2010 bronze) and was a contributing member of the U23 World Championship rosters that earned silver in 1997 and bronze in 2021. A 2022 NWBA Hall of Fame inductee, Schulte was a University of Texas Arlington student-athlete, leading the program to a NWBA National Championship in 2002. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, which he utilized as a designer of performance basketball wheelchairs for TopEnd Wheelchairs. 

Nate Hinze (Oshkosh, Wisc.) joins the pool for the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team and will continue his effort to earn the opportunity to wear “USA” on his chest. Hinze is a two-time Paralympic medalist, helping Team USA capture gold at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2020 and bronze at the London Paralympic Games in 2012. He contributed to the U.S. Men’s National Team, which secured gold at the 2011 Parapan American Games and bronze at the 2010 World Championships. 

Aaron Gouge (Grand Prairie, Tex.) remains in the pool for consideration, looking to secure a spot on the U.S. Men’s Senior National Team for the first time since 2018. He was a contributing U.S. Men’s team member who won gold at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. Gouge also earned silver medals at Worlds in 2014 and 2018.

- Assistant Coach Scott Meyer of Columbia, Missouri
- Assistant Coach Michael Paye of Warren, Michigan
- Team Leader Tony Frescas of Omaha, Nebraska
- Athletic Trainer Jeremy Johnson of Dothan, Alabama    
 
Assisting in preparations as part of the extended staff are:

- Strength and Conditioning Coach Katie McClosky of Houston, Texas
- Sports Dietitian Marta Scechura of Chicago, Illinois
- Sport Psychologist Adam O’Neil of Boulder, Colorado
